Melbourne Pocket Guide – brought to you by Illustrator Dawn Tan

For Melbourne-based illustrator and artist Dawn Tan, inspiration is found in the intricacies of everyday life – especially food and nature. Her signature whimsical watercolour designs have been featured in Frankie Magazine, the Herald Sun, Inside Out Magazine and Smith Journal, to name but a few.

At Booodl we love hearing about interesting people and the places where they love to shop. After all, it’s the great little stores, the wonderful people that run them and the interesting people that shop there that form the base for thriving retail communities!

Here, Dawn shares her favourite hidden gems in and around Seddon, Melbourne.

For shoe shopping…

I love the shoes from BARED in Armadale (1098 High St, Armadale). They do such stylish, yet comfortable shoes that are also great for tricky feet. They’re the best!

For finding the perfect gift…

There’s so many lovely stores out there. I do love my local Sedonia in Seddon, Melbourne. I always walk to it whenever I need last minute gifts. They sell lots of pretty things that’s also useful. Think honey soaps, fun earrings, delicious candles, enamel ware… sometimes (actually, most times!) I end up buying things for myself too. Haha!

For finding unique items….

I know this is a bit weird but I really love my local grocery store. It’s a tricky name to pronounce – A.Bongiovanni & Son, and I can never really remember what it’s called when I first moved to the neighbourhood. So my friends and I nicknamed it Bon Jovi and it’s stuck since! But yes, Bon Jovi does stock a whole range of very interesting food items. I love buying items because of its interesting packaging and the range they stock at Bon Jovi is perfect. I consider them my kind of unique items!

For accessories…

I do shop a lot online and often buy unique little accessories from independent makers based overseas. But if I had to pick one from Australia, I’d say Lunar Store at 2/127 Greville Street, Prahran!

The best customer service can be found at….

Gorman! I find the Gorman ladies (Especially at the newly opened Albert Park store) really sweet and lovely. They give the best advice and they’re so funny!

For art supplies…

Right now, I do love my local West Art Supplies (44 Buckley St, Footscray). They guys in there are super nice and they do stock a good selection of materials.
